Canip is a herb that is part of the mint family.  Nepetalactone is the natural chemical in catnip that triggers a response in the brain for a majority of  cats ( 75-90 percent ). They often have a euphoric response, becoming excited for as long as 10 t0 20 minutes. This is usually followed by a period of calmness and relaxation.

Silvervine is a plant native to the mountains of Japan, China and Russia. Cats are attracted to the earthy sweet smell of the leaves and vine of this plant and can have a similar euphoric effect to catnip.  More cats respond to silvervine than catnip. Cats enjoy chewing on the vine ( stick ) of this plant, promoting good dental health as it can help keep teeth tartar free.

Valerian is a flowering perennial plant that is part of the herb family. Cats find the strong scent of Valerian root irresistible. Just a pinch of cut up root will expose your cat to the act natural oil Actinidine, which will turn your kitty into an ecstatic drool machine. this makes valerian root another intriguing alternative to catnip.
